Liverpool Anglican Cathedral The Cathedral’s splendid grandeur is the very appropriate setting for this concert of music mainly by England’s best-loved twentieth century composers. The first half will contain Parry’s stirring I Was Glad, and Gorecki’s dramatic Totus Tuus for unaccompanied choir. The Northern Arts Orchestra will also play Gustav Holst’s St Paul Suite for strings, together with Gerald Finzi’s delightful Clarinet Concerto with soloist Chris Swann. All forces come together in the second half for John Rutter’s energetic and melodious Magnificat. St. Peter’s Church, Ruthin The choir reinforces its Welsh roots with this welcome visit to North Wales, when the emphasis will be on music with Welsh, Scottish and Irish origins. We are delighted to be performing in a church which has just celebrated its 700th anniversary, and the music will include the choir’s recent commission from Ian Stephens, Songs of Love and Sorrow, and works by composers as different as Hubert Parry, William Mathias and the choir’s Patron, Karl Jenkins. Liverpool Philharmonic Hall LWC will be joined by the RLPO and two outstanding soloists in Ralph Vaughan Williams’ stirring and dramatic Sea Symphony. Set to words by the poet Walt Whitman, the music expresses all the moods of the sea and rouses all the emotions that sea-loving Liverpudlians will recognise. The main work in the first half of the concert will be the ever-popular Lark Ascending, voted by Classic FM listeners in the hall of fame 2009 and 2010 as their favourite piece of classical music.
